Last week, Congress passed, and the president signed into law, the latest government spending bill, a bipartisan deal that, among other things, extended over 30 expiring provisions of the Internal Revenue Code. The bill, titled the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018, included a 1-year extension of the Energy Efficient Commercial Building Deduction, Section 179D, making it available to architects, engineers, contractors, and property owners for building projects completed in 2017.
The Energy Efficient Commercial Building Deduction, or 179D as it’s known, is a federal tax deduction of up to $1.80 per square foot for the construction or renovation of energy efficient buildings. The incentive is available to commercial property owners as well as architects, engineers, and contractors who work on local, state, or federal building projects.
